The Labour Party presidential candidate, Dr Chibuzo Okereke, has maintained that Africa must remain the absolute centerpiece of Nigeria’s foreign policy, despite recurring xenophobic tensions and incidents in countries like South Africa and Ghana.
Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Dr. Okereke addressed the history of diplomatic relations and anti-immigrant sentiment, stressing the immense strategic power of African unity and solidarity.
“This (xenophobia) is a small mind issue. The South African government and people appear not to understand the power of togetherness,” Okereke stated.
Restoring Nigeria’s “Big Brother” Role and Regional Reciprocity
Recalling Nigeria’s decisive role in the liberation struggle against apartheid rule in South Africa, Dr. Okereke argued that Nigeria must continue to exercise responsible continental leadership. Key foreign policy positions outlined in his manifesto include:
-
Elevating Continental Consciousness: Shifting Africa’s political mindset away from insular identity politics and the exclusionary “us versus them” paradigm toward collaborative economic growth.
-
Embracing Global Best Practices: Modeling Nigeria’s diaspora and immigration outlook on inclusive melting pots like the United States and Canada, where skilled contributors are welcomed and protected regardless of origin.
-
Institutional Reciprocity: Ensuring that while African nations must respect Nigerian citizens and enforce laws fairly against genuine offenders, the Nigerian government will maintain a framework of robust diplomatic reciprocity.
-
Economic Productivity and Leadership: Combating xenophobia at its root by fostering responsible governance, higher domestic productivity, and mutual continental respect.
